Grant Awarded for PCC to Begin East End Immigration Initiative
Peconic Community Council, Inc. is pleased to announce the awarding of a grant in the fall of 2006 in the amount of $30,000, from the Horace Hagedorn Foundation. This grant was awarded, September 2006, to begin the East End Immigration Initiative. PCC was an integral part of a task-force made up of several human service, church, and Latino organizations whose purpose was to come up with creative solutions to address the overcrowded housing and crack-down of undocumented immigrants. Out of this task-force the idea of "Block captains" and cultural competency education for the community as a whole was developed. A bilingual Spanish outreach worker, Sophie Worrell, was hired to assist in connecting with the immigrant community. The pilot project is now underway in the Flanders/Riverside area of the Town of Southampton.
Recent Issues Addressed by PCC and It's Coalitions:
- Sponsoring night school classes in English as a Second Language & Computer Skills.
- Advocating to County Officials for Alternatives to Incarceration for those accused of non-violent crimes in lieu of expensive major prison expansion.
- Planning a conference on Affordable Housing to bring together East End decision makers.
