Empire State Association of Adult Homes and Assisted Living Facilities

The only association that solely represents proprietary and non-profit adult homes/assisted living residences. It is recognized by government as the voice of assisted living providers. It has been instrumental in effecting regulatory and inspection process reforms. It has lobbied successfully to create Medicaid revenue sources for home care/assisted living services, and to secure the Quality Incentive Program (QUIP) an operator subsidy for adult home residents in receipt of Supplemental Security Income (SSI). It is the state affiliate for the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), the national association that effectively represents assisted living interests on the federal level.

Available Manuals and Publications include: "The Assisted Living Vision"; "Adult Home Procedures Manual"; "Licence Home Care Services Agency Manual"; "OSHA Compliance Manual"; and "Managed Care Briefing Booklet". Seminar Series: Professional consultants provide seminars to membership on a range of topics including: "Comprehensive Review/State of the Art for Adult Home Operators of facilities 40 Beds or Fewer", "Creating a Strategic Plan for Individual Adult Homes/Assisted Living", "Operating a Licensed/Limited Home Care Services Agency", and "Marketing Your Adult Home in a Changing Health Care World". Selected seminars are also available as audio tapes.

Expanded In-Home Services for the Elderly Program (EISEP)

This program is funded through the Suffolk County Office for the Aging and administered for the Town of Southampton by the Dominican Sisters Family Health Service. Services provided through EISEP include case management and the services of a home worker which include light housekeeping and other non-medical assistance. Volunteers also assist in carrying out this program.

Long Island Alzheimer's Foundation

Since its creation in 1988, LIAF has served as a lifeline to the more than 120,000 families in Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn and Queens caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's. LIAF receives approximately 300 requests for information each month. Each request is promptly answered with up-to-date information about diagnosis and treatment, compassionate counseling, referrals to community-based services, home health agencies and medical, healthcare an geriatric professionals and a wide range of other services, products and programs

Among the many services and products LIAF offers are: "Living With Alzheimer's", a trio of educational video programs; Resource and Referral Center; An innovative home Safety Program; Staff social workers to assist families with much-needed information, counseling, support, referrals and linkages to community-based programs; LIAFline, an informative quarterly newsletter; The Memory Lane Club, a social model adult day care program; Annual "Coping and Caring" Conferences in Nassau and Suffolk; Free Community Education Workshops throughout the four counties focusing on legal, medical, home safety and care giving issues, as well as generic workshops to increase awareness of Alzheimer's disease; A Directory of Services for Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau and Suffolk; Periodic International Research Symposia that assemble the world's foremost Alzheimer's researchers to collaborate on new treatments; "Guidelines to the Caregivers", an audiotape with many excellent caregiver tips; Support Groups for caregivers, adult children, teens and individuals in the early stages Alzheimer's that meet on a weekly or monthly basis and provide important support and guidance; A Speaker's Bureau provides community groups with knowledgeable speakers who can address concerns about symptoms, treatments, genetics, care giving and other topics; Legal Briefs - Members of LIAF's Legal Advisory Board collaborate on an annual publications; Annual Grant Award Program, which funds community programs that provide special services to AD sufferers and their families; In-Service Training - LIAF staff and Advisory Board members conduct In-Service Training for staff at nursing homes, home healthcare agencies, Hospice and other community organizations; Internships - LIAF provides internship opportunities for area nursing and social work students; and Referral Lists for Geriatricians (MD), Geriatric Psychiatrists, Elder Law Attorneys, Geriatric Case/Care Managers, Drug Trials and other Research Projects, Adult Day Care Programs, Support Groups and Adult Homes that are appropriate for Alzheimer's Patients, are updated constantly.
