Long Island Cares, Inc.

Founded in 1980 by the late singer/activist Harry Chapin in response to the problems of hunger and poverty on Long Island, Long Island Cares, Inc. is a not-for-profit community based organization working in partnership with more than 410 agencies in Nassau and Suffolk counties. These agencies include soup kitchens, food pantries, homeless shelters, day care and senior centers. Long Island Cares goals are to provide emergency food where and when it is needed; to sponsor programs that help families achieve self-sufficiency, and to educate the general public about hunger and its existence on Long Island.

Long Island Cares' Regional Food Bank: In response to the need for a year round resource, Long Island Cares opened the Long Island Regional Food Bank in February 1982. Long Island Cares solicits and then distributes food to those agencies serving the region's needs of the hungry by distributing food to food pantries, soup kitchens, senior nutrition sites, day care centers and homeless shelters in Nassau and Suffolk Counties. These programs in turn, distribute the food to their needy clients, and/or provide meals from the food received. Contact Person - Lynn Needelman. Long Island Cares' New Paths to Achievement Program: The New Paths to Achievement Program is a community outreach program intended to provide resources for low income , single head-of-household women and their children. New Path's strives to assist its participants to gain self-esteem,learn job skills, gain employment experience and ultimately become self-sufficient and independent of the public welfare system. This program encourages participant understanding of the social, political and economic forces which have contributed to their condition through a series of participatory workshops. Workshops are enhanced through internships with local businesses which allow the participants hands-on work experience. Job placement assistance is offered to participants upon completion of the program. Contact person - Ruth Greenberg. Long Island Cares' Job Training Program: Long Island Cares' Job Training Program is designed to raise self-esteem and confidence of high school students, while also supplying them with basis warehouse skills. The goal is to teach and instill the necessary tools to compete in the current job market and to build self-esteem so that they may succeed. Emphasis is placed on vocational skills and job training. Sessions consist of small group discussions, classroom instruction, and hands-on training at the Long Island Cares Food Bank. Students are provided with individual sessions upon completion of the program to assist with job placement in a local warehouse. Contact person - Ruth Greenberg.

Senior Centers: Meals are provided. Many social, cultural, educational and recreation opportunities are offered. Round trip transportation is available if necessary.

Home Delivered Meals: Can be provided on a temporary or long-term basis five days per week for homebound seniors.

Adult Day Care Program: Provides companionship and stimulation for frail elderly and Alzheimers participants as well as respite, information, referrals and support groups for caregivers. Continental breakfast and hot lunch served daily. Transportation can be provided.

Location: Town Community Center, 655 Flanders Road, 8:00 am - 2:00 pm, Monday through Friday.

Caregiver Support Groups meet on the second and last Wednesday of each month at 1:00 pm. Support Group for Adult Children of Aging Parents also meets twice monthly.

Essential Services and Handicapped Transportation Services - 728-1110

Senior Shuttle provides transportation to shopping, banking, errands and doctors' appointments. Vehicle equipped with handicapped lift can be provided upon request.

Are You Okay?: A daily telephone reassurance program to confirm all is well for seniors living alone or disabled. This program features a computerized telephone system that will make daily calls to subscribers at the same time each day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Please call 727-0325.

Recreation Programs: Information may be obtained by calling The Parks and Recreation Office at 283-6011. Senior Programs offered include: Annual Senior Citizens Conference, Annual Senior Citizens Picnic. Exercise Programs, Country Western Dancing, Bus Trips, Computer Classes, Defensive Driving Programs, The Senior Spotlight Newsletter, Craft Classes, plus assorted other classes of interest to the senior population.

Office for Women: Helps women who are caregivers and financial supporters deal with child care stress, elder care stress, and job and financial stress by providing services including information and referral, monthly breakfast with a speaker, networking, evening workshops and TV programs on family issues.

Senior Adult Day Care Center: Provides supervised, meaningful day activities for elderly people who need either supervision or socialization. Intake and assessment are done to provide a comprehensive treatment plan. Three meals and transportation are provided for the client.

Stop Abusive Violence Toward the Elderly: Provides services which help families cope with the stress of financial and physical care giving services to elderly members of family.
